It Starts at Home
Great! So you’ve evaluated the products you put on your skin, now it’s time to look at the rest of your home. The biggest source of chemicals in your home can be found under your kitchen sink (or wherever you keep your cleaning supplies). Many household cleaners contain ingredients that can be irritating the the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Some, when combined, can produce gases that can be fatal (NEVER, mix bleach with other cleaning products).
When it comes to decreasing the toxins in my home, these are the steps I take:
No synthetic fragrances or dyes (laundry detergents, air fresheners, candles, dish soap).
Buy from brands I trust (Branch Basics and Plant Therapy are two of my favorites).
Make my own (all purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, room spray).
For the most part, I make my cleaning products and room sprays myself. Generally, I use a combination of water, essential oils and alcohol or white vinegar. When it comes to choosing the essential oils you use in your products there are some things to note: not all essential oils are safe for pets and/or children and not all essential oils are as “clean/pure/non-toxic” as they claim to be. When it comes to choosing the essential oils I use in my home I love Plant Therapy.
Plant Therapy has many resources for learning more about using essential oils safely. If you’re wondering if an oil is safe for your kids look for the “kid safe” label. If you have pets in your home, read the “product details.” This area contains a lot of other valuable pieces of information such as safety during pregnancy and with nursing. In addition to these safety measures, Plant Therapy also has organic essential oils available. If you don’t want to make your own household products, they’ve already done it for you!
